County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors Statements Regarding County’s Acquisition of Regional Medical Center

The County of Santa Clara and HCA Healthcare have reached a definitive agreement for the County to acquire Regional Medical Center (RMC), a move that will preserve critical healthcare services for Santa Clara County residents, particularly those who live in underserved neighborhoods.  RMC is expected to join the Santa Clara Valley Healthcare system in early April.

Below are statements from the County’s Board of Supervisors regarding today’s announcement:

President Susan Ellenberg, District 4: ““This is a significant purchase and one that was absolutely necessary for the surrounding community and the county as a whole after the unacceptable reduction of services at Regional Medical Center. When the trauma center was downgraded, we immediately saw impacts at Valley Medical Center and other parts of our health system. We look forward to begin restoring lost services for the community on Day 1 of the deal closing.”

Vice President Otto Lee, District 3: “I’m glad we’ve gotten this deal done and Regional Medical Center can officially join Santa Clara Valley Healthcare. I’m excited to welcome Regional employees into the County family. While we are celebrating this milestone, we need to bring back desperately needed services for our community. We will need to work hard together to elevate Regional to the level of excellence it deserves.”

Supervisor Sylvia Arenas, District 1: “Growing up in East San José Alexian Brothers, now Regional, was a hospital that the community relied on and that people trusted. By buying Regional, the County will rebuild that trust and restore services where they are needed most. This is a huge milestone in the County’s mission and legacy of serving as a safety net for the whole county – including East San José and South County.”

Supervisor Betty Duong, District 2: ““The scaling back of health services at RMC has hit East San José hard. The County’s purchase and saving of Regional Medical Center, located in the heart of one of the most marginalized and historically disadvantaged areas of our county, is essential to restore critical healthcare access,” said Supervisor Betty Duong. “I am so proud of our county staff and Board of Supervisors for making this happen and I look forward to seeing full services return to Regional Medical Center as soon as possible.”

Supervisor Margaret Abe-Koga, District 5: "This acquisition is a win for healthcare access across the entire county.  Purchasing and integrating RMC into the County’s health system will not only allow us to restore critical services in a high need area, it relieves pressure on other parts of our network and integrates RMC into a health system with 15 clinics and 3 other hospitals, improving care coordination and streamlining access."
