County of Santa Clara to Host Women’s Equality Day Event August 23

“Back to Basics: Women to the Polls” theme emphasizes the crucial role of voter participation

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF. — The County of Santa Clara Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), an advisory body dedicated to eliminating gender discrimination and promoting equality, invites the public to its annual Women's Equality Day event on Friday, Aug. 23 at 10 a.m., with doors opening at 9 a.m., at the Mexican Heritage Plaza, 1700 Alum Rock Ave., in San José. This year’s theme, “Back to Basics: Women to the Polls,” emphasizes the crucial role of voter participation in safeguarding the rights and freedoms of women in our country.

Women’s Equality Day, observed annually on Aug. 26, commemorates the adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920, which secured women’s right to vote. With pivotal issues concerning women’s health, safety, and freedom on the ballot this fall, the Commission is rallying all citizens, especially women, to exercise their right to vote.

“Women have always been at the forefront of social change, and this year’s theme is a powerful reminder that our participation in elections is more important than ever,” said Lisset Nevárez, Chair of the Women’s Equality Day event. “We must continue to use our voices to protect and advance the rights of all women.”

This year’s event, co-hosted with Valley Health Foundation and The Office of Women’s Policy, is the Commission’s annual fundraiser. Proceeds will support women and girls of Santa Clara County through the Commission’s mini-grant program, which funds initiatives aimed at improving their lives.

Jessica Paz-Cedillos, Co-Executive Director of School of Arts and Culture, will lead the program to honor the Women of Impact, award organizations that have positively impacted justice-involved women, and hear from speakers. The event will feature a keynote address by Dianna Zamora-Marroquin, Senior Director of Public Affairs at Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, who was named the first Woman of the Year by Congressman Ro Khanna. Attendees will also have an opportunity to bid on silent auction items, explore a vendor gallery showcasing local community partners and women-owned businesses, and network with community leaders.

The Commission on the Status of Women was established by the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors to advocate for policies and programs that support gender equity. Over the years, the Commission has played a key role in shaping County policies that address the needs of women and girls, and it continues to work closely with the Office of Women’s Policy to ensure that these issues remain a priority.
