Applications to Serve on the Blue Ribbon Commission on Improving Custody Operations Now Available
Deadline to Submit Applications is October 16, 2015
SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF. --At its meeting on October 6, 2015, the Board of Supervisors authorized the creation of a Blue Ribbon Commission on Improving Custody Operations to swiftly guide the custody reform process through assessment of current policies, procedures and operations; and, to report back to the Board of Supervisors and appropriate Board Committees within 180 days with their evaluations and recommendations. The Blue Ribbon Commission on Improving Custody Operations includes positions for interested community members to participate as voting members.
“The Blue Ribbon Commission has important work to do to help the County examine policies, procedures and practices in place in our correctional facilities,” said President Dave Cortese, County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors. “The Board of Supervisors has given the Commission a broad mandate to be accomplished over the next six months.”
The County is seeking applications from interested individuals for each of the available seats. To be eligible for appointment by the President of the Board of Supervisors, the individual must commit to fully participating in the Blue Ribbon Commission for a six-month period. It is anticipated that meetings will occur during the work day, and all meetings will be held at the County Government Center, 70 W. Hedding Street, San Jose.
“In order to increase accountability and success, it is of utmost importance that the work of the Blue Ribbon Commission is transparent and inclusive,” said Supervisor Cindy Chavez. “That is why the number of members has been increased to 25 and one-third of the seats have not been pre-designated and are open to the public-at-large."
Because the Blue Ribbon Commission is a Brown Act body, all meetings will be public, and all members of the public are welcome to participate – regardless of whether they are appointed as a voting member. Pursuant to the Political Reform Act of 1974, some disclosure of financial interests may be required of appointed members. Members of the Commission will not be compensated for their service.
If you are interested in serving, applications are available online at www.sccgov.org/blue-ribbon-commission-application. Completed applications along with a resume and statement of interest are to be submitted to the Office of the Clerk of the Board. Applications must be received no later than Friday, October 16, 2015, 5:00 p.m. Final appointments to the Commission will be announced at the October 20, 2015, Board of Supervisors meeting.
