County Kicks-Off 14th Annual Binational Health Week

A Month-long Series of Health Activities and Services thru Oct. 30 to Provide Information and Resources to Thousands of Underserved Residents

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF‑ For the 14th consecutive year, the County of Santa Clara is kicking off its annual Binational Health Week, in partnership with the Consulate General of México in San José, dozens of community partners and hundreds of volunteers. The month-long series of health activities and services expands through October 30.

“Healthy individuals make healthy communities that have the potential to thrive”, said County of Santa Clara Supervisor Cindy Chavez. “What we accomplish every year through Binational Health Week is the result of our Public Health Department’s leadership combined with the collaboration, commitment, and support of the Consulate General of México in San Jose and many partner agencies, community organizations and volunteers”.

Known as the largest health mobilization effort in the Americas, and the largest initiative of federal, state and local governments in the Americas, Binational Health Week seeks to improve the health and well-being of underserved Latinos living in the United States and Canada. This year’s focus includes issues that are relevant to the Latino community: Chronic Diseases, Infectious Diseases, Access to Healthcare, Mental Health, and Women's Health. Most activities and events are free to participants.

“We want everyone living in Santa Clara County to have access to healthcare and resources,” said County of Santa Clara Supervisor Dave Cortese. “This year’s calendar offers plenty of useful information and activities for individuals and families. Some of them may significantly improve their lives.”

Since its inception in Santa Clara County in 2005, Binational Health Week has hosted over 249 community events, reached over 317,000 residents, administered 22,000 health screenings and collaborated with over 40 agencies each year. The success of BHW efforts is due to the collaboration, commitment, and support of the many agencies and organizations in the community.

“The health of Latino communities in the county has improved in many ways, but disparities in health and social outcomes persist," said Dr. Sara Cody, County of Santa Clara Health Officer and Director of the Public Health Department. “We are pleased to join again with partners for Binational Health Week to support the health of Latino families with vaccinations, health screenings, physical activity promotion, and much more.”

All Santa Clara County residents are invited to support Binational Health Week by attending an event or supporting it as community partners or volunteers.

“During this Binational Health Week, we must look for alternatives to help more people to access health care.” Said Juan Manuel Calderón Jaimes, Cónsul General of México in San José. “Through our Health Window (Ventanilla de Salud) and our Financial Advisory Window (Ventanilla de Asesoría Financiera) we are working not only to offer information and advice to access medical insurance and low-cost services, but we are also advising our community on how to include health care in their family budget.”

About Binational Health Week

Binational Health Week (BHW) is one of the largest mobilization efforts in the Americas to improve the health and well-being of underserved immigrants from Latin America living in the United States and Canada. Every year nearly 4,000 activities are coordinated, directly benefitting over 700,000 people. It is estimated that more than 10,000 agencies and 15,000 volunteers collaborate along with 150 consulates.

More about Binational Health Week

Binational Health Week was created in 2001 with the objective of raising awareness and responding to the unique health care challenges of Latinos living in the United States and Canada. Since its inception, Binational Health Week has evolved into one of the largest mobilization efforts in the Americas to improve the health and well-being of Latino population. This has been possible thanks to the leadership of local jurisdictions and public health departments, Secretariats of Health and Foreign Affairs of Mexico, in conjunction with the Health Initiative of the Americas at UC Berkeley, the Secretariats of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala, Honduras, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, and several other Latin American consulates.

Santa Clara County Binational Health Week efforts and activities are listed online at sccbhw.org
