WHY:

Binational Health Week occurs every year in October, when the community, government agencies, and thousands of volunteers come together to host a series of health education and health promotion events. This is one of the largest mobilization efforts in the Americas to improve the health and well-being of immigrants from Latin America living in the United States and Canada. The Santa Clara County Public Health Department partners with the Consulate of México in San José, hospitals, clinics, community-based organizations, and volunteers, collaborating to coordinate and host a series of events for our residents.

Since the inception of Binational Health Week in Santa Clara County in 2005, we have hosted more than 249 community events, reached over 317,000 residents, administered 22,000 health screenings and collaborated with over 40 agencies each year. The success of these efforts is the result of the collaboration, commitment, and support of the many agencies and organizations in the community.

The eighteenth edition of Binational Health Week in the United States, and fourteenth edition in Santa Clara County, will consist of nearly a month of health-related activities. Please see calendar below for the complete list of activities and events or download the 2018 Binational Health Week Brochure at https://www.sccgov.org/sites/phd/collab/BHW/Documents/bhw-prog.pdf.

More about Binational Health Week

Binational Health Week was created in 2001 with the objective of raising awareness and responding to the unique health care challenges of Latinos living in the United States and Canada. Since its inception, Binational Health Week has evolved into one of the largest mobilization efforts in the Americas to improve the health and well-being of Latino population. This has been possible thanks to the leadership of local jurisdictions and public health departments, Secretariats of Health and Foreign Affairs of Mexico, in conjunction with the Health Initiative of the Americas at UC Berkeley, the Secretariats of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala, Honduras, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, and several other Latin American consulates.

Santa Clara County Binational Health Week efforts and activities are listed online at sccbhw.org
