Low-cost Transportation Now Available for Older Adults in Parts of San José

A curb-to-curb transportation service is expanding into ZIP Codes 95118, 95119, and 95122 through a new County partnership with RYDE

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF.— Older adults in parts of San José can now sign up for an affordable curb-to-curb transportation service meant to help seniors (ages 65+) maintain their independence and mobility to run errands, attend medical appointments, and visit with friends. Starting today, June 13, the service called Reach Your Destination Easily (RYDE) will become available in three new San José ZIP Codes: 95118, 95119, and 95122 – adding to current service areas that include Campbell, Cupertino, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno, and Morgan Hill.

“The expansion of this transportation service spells independence for thousands of Seniors in our area enabling them to go to the movies, grocery shopping or to a medical appointment. This expanded service keeps Seniors moving and actively engaged in the community which is good for their overall health,” said County Supervisor Cindy Chavez, who chairs the County’s Children, Seniors and Families Committee. “We don’t have control over how old we get but we have control over how active and engaged we want to be in day-to-day activities.”

The County’s new partnership with RYDE will help create a countywide transportation program for older adults, as part of ongoing efforts to meet the many emerging needs of the region's growing senior population. The new ZIP Codes were chosen based on the areas’ lack of transportation options coupled with high numbers of older adults. More neighborhoods are expected to be added later this year.

“The aging population in Santa Clara County is growing in numbers, so we know demand for all sorts of services will go up exponentially in the coming years,” said Vanessa Merlano Sittauer, who manages the County’s Senior Nutrition Program. “Whether it’s providing hot meals or arranging easy and affordable transportation, our goal is to empower older adults in our community in order to live independently wherever they wish.”

The transportation service can be used for non-emergency trips, such as going to Senior Nutrition Program sites, medical appointments, shopping and other errands, socialization events, restaurants or grocery stores, and more. RYDE can take older adults who qualify to non-medical trips up to eight miles from their home, or to medical trips up to 16 miles from their place of residence. The fees, which can range from $0.90 to $18.00 per ride, are based on income and the number of miles traveled. Financial assistance is available.

To use the service, residents must register and should call 408-755-7614 or email [email protected]. For more information, go to
