Santa Clara Valley Medical Center Named to U.S. News & World Report 2024 Best Hospitals for Maternity Care

Santa Clara County, Calif. − Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (SCVMC) has been named as a 2024 High Performing hospital for Maternity Care, the highest award a hospital can earn from U.S. News’ Best Hospitals for Maternity Care. SCVMC earned this high performance designation in recognition of its maternity care as measured by factors such as newborn complication rates.

"We are proud to be named as one of the nation’s highest-performing hospitals for maternity care. This recognition is a testament to the commitment of our doctors, nurses and staff who provide the highest quality of care for our expectant and new mothers,” said Paul E. Lorenz, Chief Executive Officer for Santa Clara Valley Healthcare.

“It is an honor to again receive this national recognition. This validates that maternal outcomes for our Black, Latina, Asian, and Pacific Islander mothers are among the best in the nation.” said Dr. James Byrne, Chair of the Santa Clara Valley Healthcare Department of OB/Gyn. “Our team values the trust placed in them by expecting families and returns that trust with the best care anywhere.”

The U.S. News’ Best Hospitals for Maternity Care is an annual evaluation designed to assist expectant parents, in consultation with their prenatal care team, in making informed decisions about where to receive maternity care that best meets their family’s needs.

“These hospitals have C-section rates that are 26% lower, and newborn complication rates that are 37% lower than unrecognized hospitals,” said Jennifer Winston, health data scientist at U.S. News. “Parents-to-be can research their local hospitals’ performance metrics at health.usnews.com to help them choose where to have their baby.”

The U.S. News Best Hospitals for Maternity Care methodology is based entirely on objective measures of quality, such as C-section rates in lower-risk pregnancies, newborn complication rates, exclusive breast milk feeding rates, early elective delivery rates, birthing-friendly practices and transparency on racial/ethnic disparities, among other measures.
