Youth Voices of Change

The Santa Clara County Youth Task Force is recruiting new members for the 2024 session

Inside the echoing halls of the Board of Supervisors chambers, a group of vibrant young individuals come together on the first Wednesday of the month to convene the Youth Task Force (YTF). The YTF advises the Board of Supervisors and Office of Children and Families Policy on many youth-related matters. Collaborating with other youth commissions across the county and attending relevant events, they share the County’s priorities related to youth in Santa Clara County.

Before the hammer hits the gavel to begin their meeting, this group of upstart students gathers to discuss their plans for the upcoming year, including their excitement for the Youth Leadership Summit on April 27, 2024.

Leading this dynamic group of students is Anushka Tadikonda, whose infectious energy fills the room, and Nico Fischer, whose thoughtful attention helps to set the pace.

"The Youth Task Force is an amazing opportunity for students to be involved in local government," Nico explains. "We give a voice to 400,000 youth in the county. Our goal is not only to educate but also to be educated."

Anushka adds, "We are composed of 16 individuals from around the county and five districts, and our objective is to best represent the youth across the county. We aim to address prominent issues, understand them deeply, and craft meaningful solutions."

Their meetings are not mere formalities but platforms for innovation and collaboration. "We have so many interesting, amazing people, both from the county and the outside community, come to talk to us," Nico shares. “It gives us a real insight into the inner workings of local government."

For Anushka, the journey to the YTF was a deliberate choice. "I wanted to represent youth who may not even know this opportunity exists," she explains. "I want to make sure their voices are heard."

Their passion transcends political affiliations. "You don't have to be interested in politics or government," Anushka emphasizes. "You just need to be passionate about connecting with your community, about helping people."

Nico recommends that other forward-thinking students consider joining the YTF. His decision to join the YTF reflects his genuine desire for change. "In my application, I spoke about the things I love about the Bay Area and what I think could be better," he recalls, his voice filled with conviction.

As they delve into agenda items and discuss reports and strategies, they realize the magnitude of their impact. "Connecting with the community, giving back—it's one of the most rewarding experiences of my life," Anushka remarks, her eyes reflecting the genuine sense of fulfillment she finds in their work.

Through their dedication and perseverance, Nico, Anushka, and their fellow task force members have become catalysts for change in Santa Clara County. Together, they champion the voices of the youth, leading a wave of transformation that resonates far beyond the confines of the Board of Supervisors chambers. They are not just going through the motions or resigned to the status quo; they are agents of change, shaping the future of their community one step at a time.
